Kylian Mbappe: PSG star was once subject of Man Utd transfer chat involving Ed Woodward | Football | Sport

Mbappe will start for PSG in their Champions League showdown with Manchester United tonight, with the World Cup winner set to lead Thomas Tuchel’s depleted attack.

Tuchel’s men were already dealt a blow when Neymar was ruled out for 10 weeks in January, but the injury to Edinson Cavani in Saturday’s win over Bordeaux was another setback.

Mbappe, and fellow attackers Julian Draxler and Angel Di Maria, will be key if they are to stop Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s resurgent United side.

The 45-year-old has enjoyed a near perfect start to life as Mourinho’s successor, winning 10 of his first 11 matches at the helm.

United’s attack has been particularly reinvigorated, with Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard all playing with purpose and intent.

But, had Mourinho encouraged Woodward, he could have become a United target.

A report from the Independent previously claimed that the duo met to discuss players in the summer, with recruitment on the top of their agenda.

Woodward, having seen United finish a respectable albeit underwhelming second in the Premier League, proposed a Galactico signing.

Mbappe’s name – alongside that of PSG team-mate Neymar and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, were mooted in the conversation.

But Mourinho said no.

The former United manager supposedly had a vision as to how his side should play – and did not consider a flair player necessary.

After all, he already had the players who are playing so well under Solskjaer among his ranks.

Instead, he reportedly proposed a hard-working player such as Chelsea’s Willian, who he had previously managed at Stamford Bridge.

However, Woodward failed to act and United ended the summer transfer window with just Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant as their sole recruits.

Failure to acquire transfer targets was one of the reasons for Mourinho’s frustration as his time at Old Trafford teetered out.

And whether Mbappe comes back to haunt United – and highlight another Mourinho mistake – remains to be seen.
