Chelsea transfer news: Adrien Rabiot approached to replace Cesc Fabregas

Chelsea have made significant steps to sign Paris Saint-Germain misfit Adrien Rabiot, according to reports in France.

Rabiot has long been tipped for a central role at the Parc des Princes but the midfielder’s path to the first-team has been blocked under Thomas Tuchel this season.

The 23-year-old, who is out of contract at PSG at the end of the season, has refused to put pen to paper on a new deal in the French capital and could be set for a move away from Ligue 1.

Barcelona are among the favourites to land Rabiot and Liverpool are understood to have held ‘several meetings’ regarding a bid for the France international.

L’Equipe suggests that Chelsea are the latest club to show interest and have launched an enquiry to sign Rabiot.

Maurizio Sarri is scouring the market for Cesc Fabregas’ replacement at Stamford Bridge – with the Spaniard joining Monaco – and has identified Rabiot as a potential candidate.

It’s claimed Tottenham are also keen on the four-time Ligue 1 winner.

PSG sporting director Antero Henrique confirmed last month that Rabiot is looking to leave in the summer transfer window.

Asked if contract talks with Rabiot will resume, he replied:

‘At this point, no. ‘It was a decision made by the club following a meeting I had with the player.

‘The player informed me that he would not sign a contract and that he wanted to leave the club by being free at the end of the season, at the end of his contract.

‘For the player, this will have a very clear consequence – he will remain on the bench for an indefinite period.

‘It seems that the player and his representative have misled us for several months. I must add that this situation is disrespectful for both the club and the fans.

‘Especially from a player who has played under our colours from the training centre to the first team. A player who has always received the full support of the club.’

Sarri has made it clear that he’s keen for two more arrivals this January following Chelsea’s deal for Christian Pulisic.

‘As you know very well I am not in control of the transfer market, he said ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Newcastle.

‘In my opinion we need two players, but then it is up to the club.’
