Manchester United vice executive-chairman Woodward has supposedly made Pochettino his No 1 choice to replace Mourinho over at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils nightmare start to the Premier League season, coupled with Mourinho’s regular criticism of his playing staff, has already made it a campaign to forget.
Reports have claimed Manchester United now want Pochettino to replace Jose Mourinho in the summer, should the club miss out on a place in the Champions League qualifying positions.
And The Sun have now explained how Woodward has made Pochettino their top managerial target.
It is claimed United want a manager who, most importantly, has a rapport with the players.
Mourinho, for all his private charm and charisma, does not appear to have that.
United players can sometimes be given time off and, when they do,they often go abroad.
Paul Pogba, in particular, is known to have various friends over in Los Angeles.
And United reportedly want to stop that happening by installing a manager who makes them want to play, and train.
The Sun say Woodward also wants a manager capable of bringing stylistic football back to the club.
Under Mourinho, the football has been turgid.
And it was no better under his predecessors, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes.
A third reason United want Pochettino is because they believe he can coax the best from Pogba.
Under Mourinho, the France international is no longer a guaranteed starter.
The two heavyweights have been at war ever since the United boss hooked him against Tottenham in February.
And United supposedly believe Pochettino can succeed where Mourinho has failed.
Any appointment of the Tottenham boss will not be cheap, however, with a £40million package required.
