England bowler Liam Plunkett will turn out for Melbourne Stars this winter in Australia’s Big Bash League.

Plunkett, who has played 94 one-day games for England, replaced Lancashire’s Matt Parkinson in the Stars’ squad after he was ruled out with a back injury.

Leg-spinner Parkinson left the ongoing England Lions tour with a stress fracture in his back and has been unable to return to training.

Plunkett will now play in the second half of Australia’s domestic T20 competition, arriving at the Big Bash after Nepalese star Sandeep Lamichhane jets off to the Bangladesh Premier League.

Fast bowler Plunkett, 33, has developed into a key member of England’s one-day team over the past two years and left Yorkshire to join Surrey a few months ago.

Parkinson, who will undergo further scans in the new year, hopes to get the opportunity to play in the Big Bash again after being ruled out of the 2018-19 edition.

He said: ‘I’m determined to get fully fit over the next couple of months. Hopefully the Big Bash is an opportunity that will come around again in the future.’

Plunkett will join a number of English players in Australia, with Surrey team-mate Tom Curran signing for Sydney Sixers earlier in the week.
