What is Equal Pay Day and why are women setting their Out Of Office today?

The gender pay gap is a topic that’s been debated over and over.

Being a relatively complex thing, the numbers can overshadow the overriding point which is the fact that women are paid less than men overall.

That’s where Equal Pay Day comes in. It’s a day where we can think about the gap in wages, and look at how to close it.

Many women will be setting their out of office notifications today too. Find out about the history of the day and why they’re doing this.

Each year an Equal Pay Day is calculated based on the current gender pay gap – which is 13.7% at the moment – after which women technically work ‘for free’ until the end of the year.

This year’s date in 10 November.

Although there are a number of factors at play when it comes to pay inequality – from women being in lower paid sectors to a glass ceiling in other sectors – this day is a more simple way to highlight the wider problem.

There are a few different things people will be doing to mark the day.

Some will be making a point to ask their colleagues what they earn in an effort to improve transparency.

Others will be taking to social media to share an equals sign, or post with the #GetEqual and #EqualPayDay tags.

Women at companies like Campaign, the AAR, Oystercatchers, Wacl and Bumble have committed themselves to also setting their out of offices.

The notification does that that the recipient is in the office, but gives an automatic alert to senders that it’s Equal Pay Day and raises awareness.

So, if you get one of these today, you’re not being ghosted, you’re just being asked to think about the gender pay gap.
