Two men died in suicide pact after tying themselves together and jumping from bridge

Two men tied themselves together and then jumped to their deaths from a bridge in Wales, an inquest has ruled.

Richard Adam Hollis, 36, and Nathan Jordan Orritt, 18, fell from Menai Bridge, near Newborough, in Anglesey, on February 9 this year.

Mr Hollis’s right leg and foot were found two days prior near Y Felinheli in Gwynedd and it is thought the limbs had detached from his body when he fell.

Mr Orritt had called 999 on February 5, a day before Mr Hollis’ 37th birthday, but no-one spoke on the line and the operator eventually hung up.

Authorities said it was likely the men died shortly after the phone call.

Mr Hollis, from Preston, and Mr Jordon, from Blackpool, were in Conwy a week earler and had eventually made their way up to Menai Bridge.

Dewi Pritchard Jones, senior coroner for North West Wales, recorded the official cause of death as drowning at the Dafydd Orwig council chamber in Caernarfon yesterday.

He said he thought the men likely took their own lives and would have died very quickly.

Mr Pritchard Jones said: ‘Both men were fit and healthy and I can only conclude that they climbed over the barrier.

‘Because they were roped together, they fell together. They may have hit the bridge structure or may have hit one of the rocks at the bottom.

‘The injuries are extremely compatible with a fall from a great height.

‘Did they die as a result of their own actions? In my view, yes.

‘I can’t think of any other explanation why someone would throw themselves off a bridge.

‘The verdict recorded will be that each of the deceased did kill himself.’
