Man Utd news: Worrying Juan Mata contract news revealed over future | Football | Sport

The Spaniard helped launch United’s dramatic comeback against Juventus in the Champions League in mid-week, scoring a free-kick to make it 1-1 as the Red Devils eventually won 2-1.

But the Daily Mail say that Mata currently has no idea whether or not he will be offered an extended stay at Old Trafford with United yet to issue any form of offer.

The 30-year-old has been at United for four years since joining from Chelsea in 2014 but is into the final year of his deal at the club.

United triggered a 12-month extension earlier in 2018 but with his contract running down, he can talk to clubs overseas about pre-contract agreements for a free transfer in the summer as of January 1.

The Mail suggest that Mata is keen to remain at United but has yet to receive any news on whether he will be offered an extension.

Having dropped out of the squad entirely for two Premier League matches earlier this season after being taken off at half-time of their 3-2 defeat to Brighton, Mata has featured more regularly again in recent weeks.

The versatile play-maker scored a crucial free-kick in a come-from-behind win against Newcastle last month as well as his set-piece strike against Juve.

He has been linked with Arsenal – managed by former Valencia boss Unai Emery – with Mata keen to stay in the Premier League.

But the Mail add that a number of clubs in Spain are also interested in the World Cup winner, who is thought to pocket around £140,000-a-week at United.

Despite Mata remaining in the dark, it is believed that Jose Mourinho wants Mata to stay with United.

The Evening Standard reported last month that the Portuguese coach is pushing for new deals for Mata and fellow Spain international Ander Herrera thanks to their dressing room influence.

The duo are thought to be popular members of the squad around the club and Mourinho has spoken to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about their futures.

United have a number of players out of contract at the end of the season with defenders Chris Smalling, Ashley Young and Phil Jones among them.

United have also been in talks with Anthony Martial and David De Gea over new deals, though the club have options to extend their current terms by an extra year.

There has been little movement with either of the pair, although United are widely expected to table a fresh offer for Martial in the coming weeks.

Mourinho’s men return to action with a huge clash against Manchester City this Sunday (4.30pm).
