Man Utd news: Why Jose Mourinho wants Romelu Lukaku fit for Man City clash

Jose Mourinho is desperate to have Romelu Lukaku at his disposal for the Manchester derby to provide the power he feels United need up front at the Etihad.

Lukaku, 25, sustained a hamstring injury last week and missed the recent victories over Bournemouth and Juventus, but is hoping to be available for United’s clash with their bitter rivals this weekend.

The Belgium international was dropped to the bench as United hosted Everton prior to his injury and came on as a second-half substitute during the 2-1 victory.

While Lukaku hasn’t found the net since mid-September, Mourinho is keen to play the powerhouse forward on Sunday to add some muscle up front, according to Sportsmail.

Lukaku has taken part in light training at Carrington this week but remains a doubt for the derby.

Alexis Sanchez has played through the middle in Lukaku’s absence but the Chilean is also struggling with an injury ahead of the trip to City.

The former Arsenal man picked up a thigh problem during United’s Champions League win over Juve and will be assessed.

Mourinho is expected to provide an update on both Lukaku and Sanchez at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.
