Hand luggage: Avoid packing this one thing to beat budget airlines’ strict rules | Travel News | Travel

Hand luggage is often only an option for holidaymakers going on shorts breaks.

But new findings show there is a way to fit a month’s worth of stuff in a carry on bag.

This means passengers wouldn’t have to splurge on hold luggage even if they were indulging in a long holiday.

The trick it to choose the items wisely and then pack them into the case in a strategic way.

Luggage storage network Stasher has created a guide to help travellers pack efficiently.

However, they say there is one item you definitely shouldn’t pack in your hand luggage.

Airline passengers should always be sure to pick the right bag. Stasher recommends four-wheeled soft luggage no lager than 56cm in length, 48cm in width and 25cm in depth.

Travellers can pack four T-shirts, five long-sleeved tops, three pairs of trousers, seven pairs of underwear, seven pairs of socks, a protective outer jacket, one pair of shoes and a pair of sunglasses.

You should also remember not to pack any liquid over 100ml when packing toiletries.

However, travellers should not pack any books as these are heavy and take up too much space.

Instead, use a tablet device and download books onto that, thereby keeping a whole selection of material at your fingertips.

When it comes to the packing itself, it’s important to master the right order.

Stasher advises putting medium weight ideas on the bottoms and sides. This includes a jacket, T-shirts, socks and underwear.

Heavy items – such as shoes, trousers and sweaters – should go in the middle.

On the top, passengers should pack lightweight items, including shirts and formal clothes.

The best airlines for hand luggage sizes are EasyJet, Jet2, British Airways.

All three of the airlines allow cabin bags up to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm for free.

EasyJet allows the best for weight as well, which is unlimited. British Airways allows as much as 23kg as well as a handbag, something EasyJet does not.

Jet2 only allow 10kg for free onboard, with no handbag or additional bag allowed.

The airline that offers the smallest bags in the cabin is Flybe, only allowing suitcases up to 55cm x 35cm x 20cm. It must not weigh more than 10kg.
