Danny Welbeck prediction made by injury expert after horror Arsenal scenes | Football | Sport

Arsenal forward Welbeck needed oxygen on the Emirates pitch after falling awkwardly during Thursday night’s 0-0 draw with Sporting Lisbon.

He was subsequently rushed to hospital as horror images were circulated on social media after BT Sport opted against replaying the incident.

Welbeck’s right ankle buckled as he landed after going up for a header and his foot ended up pointing in the wrong direction.

Injury expert Dinnery predicted how long a spell in the stands the Arsenal and England ace is now facing.

“First impression, not too dissimilar to Daniel Amartey,” Dinnery wrote on Twitter.

“After successful surgery. The Leicester midfielder is targeting a return to play in around 4 months.”

Leicester’s Amartey was diagnosed with a broken ankle after being crunched by West Ham’s Mark Noble last month.

Danny Welbeck’s latest injury is the eighth he has suffered since joining Arsenal from Manchester United.

And former Notts County head physio Johnny Wilson has offered a an even more serious prognosis.

“Injury to #Welbeck. Possible fracture dislocation of ankle which could [be] career ending,” Wilson wrote on Twitter.

“Structures within the ankle which could [be] injured [are] the medial, lateral, anterior & posterior ligaments, tibia, fibula & talus bones as well as chondral surfaces. Will need [to be] imaged #AFC.”

Wilson then detailed the specific tests Welbeck will undergo in order to determine the severity of his injury.

“X-ray will [be] used as 1st line of imaging [to] assess integrity of bones: tibia, fibula, talus, calcaneous & other smaller bones in foot especially – 5th [metatarsal]!” Wilson wrote.

“He will also [have an] MRI within next 24-48 hrs [to] assess soft tissue structures such as ligaments muscles tendons & chondral surface.”

Wilson added: “High velocity impact and landing from a height – the forces involved can be comparable to a road traffic collision.”

Arsenal will be hoping to bounce back after clearly being shocked by Welbeck’s injury when they take on Wolves on Sunday.
