Sporting Lisbon winger Luis Nani sent a brilliant message to his former Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck after the Arsenal striker suffered a horrific ankle injury.

Welbeck required oxygen and had to be stretchered off the field after landing awkwardly on his ankle after he contested a header in Sporting’s box.

The England forward spent six years alongside Nani at the Theatre of Dreams and had made a good start to life under Unai Emery at the Emirates.

Welbeck’s been plagued with injury problems throughout his career and Nani comforted the England forward as he left the field.

And Nani sent a message to his former team-mate on Twitter afterwards, wishing him all the best with his recovery.

‘Great fans, strong team spirit and important point. Get well soon, Danny!’ tweeted Nani.

Welbeck now faces an anxious wait to discover the results of his scan.

The 27-year-old has been troubled with knee problems in the past but has managed five goals in 16 appearances for the Gunners this term.

Welbeck pulled out of the England squad to face USA following his injury, having been named in the 28-man squad earlier in the day.
